Two peas

two peas in a pod? not my girls! they are very different from each other! its pretty funny actually. you have seen the pics, but every time we go to the doctor and strip them down it is just so much more evident. plus, annabel is my drama queen. that really showed through today during shots. (ps. shots are awful!!! i know all you moms know what i mean! i almost started crying today too!!)

so, as promised here are a few more pics and 2 month stats! i cant believe how much each of them has grown in just a few short weeks! i wish i could just stop time and keep them babies, but i know that i will love each stage of their growing up...well maybe not LOVE every thing in each stage, but you know what i mean. each will present its own trials and triumphs, but that is what will keep me on my toes! and with twins!! my life will never be dull again!

one last thing...thanks to my "village" who has helped me get the girls on a schedule this last week. from moms of multiples to singletons, each has been so encouraging and helpful...we are doing so much better now! its also so nice to have two healthy babies again! today was a great day, even with the shots, because we are finally on a good schedule!

sweet curious claire's stats at her 2 month check: weight 9.9 (11th percentile); height 21 1/2 inches (10th percentile); head 15 inches (50th percentile).

drama diva annabel's stats at her 2 month check: weight 11.8 (50th percentile); height 23 inches (75th percentile; head 15 1/4 inches (75th percentile).

so, claire is a peanut and annabel is a champ at packing it on!! :) remember, claire weighed 4.11 at birth and annabel weighed 5.9!

annabel on mothers day. love these sweet dresses from some friends!

claire. and they were rocking their daisy sandals from ashley!!

claire and her make shift sleep mask today at nap time.
annabel has awesome amazing eyelashes

the girls were rocking head to toe vera bradley outfits today from mimi (my mom).
snoozing after shots
dont even think about waking her up!!
awesome hair claire!!

the following are from our  2 month pictures. the first three are claire and then 3 of annabel. i think the crying pictures are so funny!

trying to get both together is hard! good enough!!
this was at the doctors office today. really shows how much bigger annabel is compared to claire. can you believe these girls are twins??!!?? i love them both so much!!

You too?

i just got back from hanging out with my awesome friend, jacqueline...we watched a few chick flicks while our husbands are out watching a batman marathon...sitting through 3 movies in a theater! oh my! but, we had fun and i loved just sitting around and giggling at dumb stuff.

i am home and sitting in bed, just reflecting on the day and praying for a few old friends. today, three different high school friends reached out to me about their journeys with infertility. the first was a huge encouragement to me. this friend was a year ahead of me in school, but we had two classes together and played softball for two years together. we are able to facebook stalk each other, and yesterday she sent me a message. she told me that she has had 2 very successful IUIs, resulting in 2 beautiful children!  it was great to hear an awesome success story when i woke up this morning!

i also have a facebook message going back and forth with a friend from my class that i was very close to in school. over time we have drifted, but thanks to facebook, we have reconnected. i have been following this friend's spiritual journey over the last few months and have been so encouraged to see some amazing, Godly growth in her life and in her relationship with her husband. she reached out to me today and told me that they have been trying for about 2 years to have a child. my heart just breaks for them! i know that she will be an amazing mother, and it is so hard to understand why this has not happened for her. i could say that for a lot of people, but i know that this sweet girl has been through a lot in her life. to see her overcome, and continue to grow in spite of some serious obstacles makes me wonder why she is being asked to wait for this blessing. i am praying for her and her husband, and their family! please pray that God would open her womb and give her a healthy baby of her own!!

the second friend i talked to...well, this is a hard one for me. i have known this friend for a long time and we were FAST friends. there are very few high school memories with them not involved!! we are the kinds of friends that do not have to talk every day, week, or even every month, but we know that we will always have each other's back. in fact, it has been several months since we had talked on the phone until today. i was contacted first by facebook message to see if they could call and ask a few questions, then we talked for about 40 minutes. i was shocked to hear that this husband and wife are also going through a hard road of infertility. they are now facing having to decide between IUI, IVF, or being done for right now. i am literally heartbroken for them! this couple has given sacrificially, for years, in full time, part time, and volunteer positions in the church. they are a couple that i can look to as a guide for spiritual matters. they have overcome big things both individually and as a couple. now, they are watching so many of their friends and family getting pregnant and having babies and wondering why God has not blessed them yet. i fully understand that feeling and the toll that infertility can take on you mentally, emotionally, physically, and relationally. i really wish that i could fix this for them. i would love to see them parent...they are going to be fantastic! please pray that God would lead them down the path that is His will for them. please pray that they will have peace in the next few months, and that the doctors would have clarity regarding their specific needs!! i know that God has some amazing things in store for them, and i cant wait to see what it is...sooner rather than later would be awesome!

i hurt for these friends! i hurt for the other families that i have met through blogging and/or facebook that are on this exact road. i will never understand why we have been asked to go down this road. i still wonder how many more things God needs to teach me before we have a baby. i think the same for these friends. i will never understand why it is so easy for some and very difficult for others. why some consider a pregnancy/child a consequence of a bad decision, while so many of us are waiting, sometimes impatiently, for our blessing. but, through it all i know that there is a plan. no, this was not my plan. no, this is not my friends' plan. but i have seen so many awesome God moments when i choose to look around. i have met some amazing people when i open myself up. i have been able to encourage and be encouraged in the most unintended ways...it can only be God. yes, this is hard. yes, it will continue to be hard for so many...until Jesus comes back. but, i am so glad that i can pray with confidence. that i know that i can talk to a God who hears and answers...and answers with very specific responses. so, please join in...have faith with and for me and my friends!

i know that i have been somewhat vague, and i have not given names. i am a very open book, but not everyone is. if you know either of these people, or think you know, please just pray for them. there is no need for anything more!!

Maybe Just a Shadow

well, today was fairly pain free. mostly, because they decided not to do the injection today.

i had the ultrasound to check my ovaries and uterus and to search for good follicles. the tech didnt know much, so i sat in an exam room for 40 minutes waiting for my doctor. good thing i really like him...guess i will have to get used to that...doctors seem to always make you wait. doctor todd told me that based on me being on day 16 (rather than 13 or 14) it was a little late to administer the shot. he could do it if i really wanted, but he suggested i save it for next month or return it if i end up pregnant this month. the one injection is $31 after my insurance covers their portion...yikes!! i am thankful that he was honest and not quick to make me spend unnecessary money! he told us to continue "trying" the next few days. dr. todd was pretty sure that i did ovulate in the last few days (while at camp) due to a fluid sack where the follicles and eggs are. he did mention the small fibroid that they saw initially, but said that it was small enough it may be just a shadow. he then gave me the next course of action:

this week peter will go for a semen analysis just to be sure again. he has been taking all of vitamins like a champ! if i do start my period in a little over a week, i will go in to have my cervix dilated again on day 3, start a higher dose of clomid/serophene, have an ultrasound and follicle search on day 13 and possible IUI on day 14.

IUI: intrauterine insemination- IUI is a fertility treatment that uses a catheter to place a number of washed sperm directly into the uterus. The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization. IUI is a fertility treatment often selected by couples who have been trying to conceive for at least one year with no success. IUI may be selected as a fertility treatment with any of the following conditions:
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Low sperm count
  • Decreased sperm mobility
  • Requirement of donor sperm
  • A hostile cervical condition, such as cervical mucus that is too thick
  • Cervical scar tissue from past procedures or endometriosis
  • Ejaculation dysfunction
www.americanpregnancy.org

i came away from todays appointment with hope. i could clearly see that God has been working in my heart and with my anxiety. i was glad to be able to sit down with dr. todd and ask lots of questions. he was great and helped me not get too overwhelmed, but encouraged me to enjoy "hanging out" with my husband. if we get to next month, then we will go from there. yes, there could be a lot to think about and stress over, but tonight i am enjoying being at home. we made cinnamon vanilla pancakes for dinner, im doing laundry, and catching up on tv i missed last week.

please pray that God would continue to give us both peace about each step in the journey. please pray that we would have clarity if we are not pregnant this month about what to do next month. we are praying specifically about whether or not we are ready for an IUI.

on a side note: last night i had several strange dreams about camp (of course, camp has been all i could think of for the past 3 weeks and it was all over yesterday!). but just before waking up, i had two of the sweetest dreams about Charlotte. in one of them we were in heaven together singing Hosanna (one of my favs and one we sang at camp). they both seemed so real that i texted peter to tell him about it. i missed her a lot this morning!

Drained

drained

that is how i feel tonight. i am physically and mentally drained from a week of camp with middle schoolers and high school service tonight, and i am drained emotionally today after Thatcher's beautiful memorial service.

i wanted to say thanks for the prayers today. i really did ok, it is just a lot for anyone to process. it was an amazing time of celebrating all that God has been doing in and through Thatcher's life here. to hear the testimonies from nurses, people in response to the blog, family member's hearts...all heavily impacted by Thatcher's 2 months and 29 days.

there were two parts of this service that will always stand out to me.

1. at the beginning of the service, my friends robin and blake (aunt and uncle to Thatcher) along with nate (Thatcher's uncle, robin's brother) and a family friend got up to sing Holy Spirit. i have added a version to listen to. how awesome to say that they were welcoming the Holy Spirit in this time. to say that what they (Thatcher's family) longed for was His presence. it was so awesome to see the family get up and lead the whole place in worship. i am not sure how they did it, but it was amazing!

holy spirit by bryan and katie torwalt

2. eric, Thatcher's daddy, got up to speak. towards the end of his speech, he encouraged us to sing praises to God so that our voices would join Thatcher's in praise. i teared up because that is how i often think of Charlotte, singing and worshipping God, and since saying good bye to her, my worship and praise has been so different...so much more meaningful. what an awesome thing to think about...our now perfect children singing and worshipping with us! i cant wait to actually be in Heaven!!!

i was invited to the private burial and luncheon after the memorial. the family did an amazing job making the whole day a celebration. even though i was on an emotional roller coaster today, i was blessed to be there and be encouraged by eric and whitney and their families. Thatcher has changed so many lives and i cant wait to see how God continues to use this little guy to further His kingdom.

Scripture from today:
Psalm 42:2-11 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me-- a prayer to the God of my life. I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?" My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?" Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Hebrews 4:14-16 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are —yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

please continue to pray for this sweet family. i remember how hard the first few days (after everything was over) were for me. please continue to prayer for peace and comfort!!!

T Shirt

i can now compare my cervix to a stretched out t-shirt. at least according to the doctor that performed my dilation yesterday. thank you for the prayers yesterday! they are all greatly appreciated. i spent the morning at my friends robin and blake's house doing hair for a few people. i was busy enough that i did not have to focus too much on what was happening later in the day. when i got to the appointment i was really nervous and sweating...great! then my boss called me. poor guy...i may have started crying on the phone! lol!! he handled it well. told me i would be fine, said he would pray for me, then had his wife text me. :) anyway. what was supposed to be an in and out, wham bam thank you ma'am, kinda thing took forever because i had to wait so long for the doctor. waiting was not helping my nervous or my sweating. oh well.

the procedure was really not all that bad, and thankfully i had been prepped to take some tylenol before i got there. they dilated my cervix using what looked to be a metal prodder...super creepy! it basically just stretches my cervix out to make more room for "the little guys" to get through when it is time. it creates a bigger pathway for better flow. they are thinking that my cervix was too tight, or too closed to let the sperm get through with out tiring themselves out/giving up. i am still not clear as to how it all works, but when i asked how my cervix would stay dilated for the next two weeks as needed, the doctor said to think of my cervix as a t-shirt. when you pull and stretch a t-shirt, it stays stretched out until you wash it again. my cervix will stay stretched out until it is washed again??!!?? uh, ok. not really sure what that means and i didnt ask any more questions. i just went with it!!

after the dilation, i was feeling a little crampy, so i came home and laid on the couch for a little bit. i wasnt feeling too bad after a bit, so i got up and got ready for a friend/coworker's baby shower. after i had been at the shower for a little bit, i could tell that i needed more meds, because i was getting uncomfortable and a little nauseous. the doc had warned me that the cramping might feel like the early stages of labor...waves of intense cramps. yep, got that and had to leave in somewhat of a hurry. on the way home i had a little bit of an emotional breakdown on/with my friend, christie (who i called by her last name for some reason and it was a little awkward! blaming it on the hormones and emotions!). by the time i was home i was a ball of cramps, bloating, sweaty, emotional mess. i should have probably stayed home and skipped the shower, but i guess that would have been too easy. plus, that is just who i am.

today, i am feeling better. still not 100%, but lets not forget i am on my period too...yeah dilated on day two of my period...really gross and super awkward. so, some of my cramps are normal. i have not felt the need to take any medication today, so that is good. emotionally, i am a lot more stable today. procedures, and the anxiety of procedures make me emotional. baby showers make me emotional. the start of my period makes me emotional. so it is no wonder i was over the edge yesterday. but all because of prayer and awesome encouragement, i made it through!

yesterday i just kept thinking and praying over a few scriptures that kept coming to mind:
philippians 4:6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

matthew 6:25, 27, 33-34 therefore i tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. each day has enough trouble of its own.

i am claiming matthew 6:33-34 this month as my verse. in fact i have it framed and just hung it on a kitchen wall. i will show you a picture in our house video...still on production! :)

DONT WORRY! it doesnt help!

2 New Babies!

there is so much that has happened in the last day and it mostly has to do with babies.

first, if you have been following baby thatcher's story, please keep praying! baby thatcher caleb was born last night at 11:09pm. he beat so many odds/predictions/etc. just by being born! then he weighed in at 6lbs 1.5oz...way more than the 5lbs 3oz. the doctors originally thought! that is awesome!!! right now, thatcher is  in the NICU and he is on a ventilator (meaning he is not breathing on his own). we are praying that changes. the doctors think that he may be having a few other complications, so they were hoping to do several tests today. please be praying for thatcher. please pray for whitney and eric...for peace and clarity and for quality time with thatcher.

as peter and i sat at the table today, we just cried for this sweet family. we cried tears of joy that thatcher has done and continues to do more than doctors gave whitney and eric hope for. we cried tears of heartache that whitney and eric have to watch their precious son go through so many tests and procedures and are still unsure of what to do or what is going to come next. we cried because we understand fighting and praying for your child.  please continue to pray for them. go to their blog and post some encouragement...and check out the sweet picture of this family of three!! the picture does not show it, but thatcher has lots of dark brown hair...so cute!!

second, i have a new baby brother!!! yep...my dad and jess had a baby boy last night! Jude Edward Southwick was born just before 8:30 pm (michigan time) weighing in at 9lbs and 21" long. jessica is doing great (she is a pro now, this is #6 in just over 6 years!!!) but is tired. jude is doing awesome too. jess said that jude is super laid back and quiet. good thing because he is the youngest of 6! sounds like the older siblings (mamie, matilda, mila, maggie, and james (we call him edy)) are all so excited and loving having another baby in the house. dad and jess have had the last 4 (i think) kids at home with a midwife, so jess is able to rest and be at home. please be praying that jess gets the rest that she needs and that jude will quickly get on a schedule.
doesnt he look super chill? this was taken today.
wow...lots of emotions over the last 24 hours!

tomorrow is my appointment with the specialist, which gives me a whole other set of emotions that i do not understand yet. i am a little nervous. i am a little anxious. i am a little excited. i am a little hopeful. so many things. i am thinking or maybe i am hoping that the doctors will not find anything tomorrow. i hope that things are fine and then i find out next week that i am pregnant. anyway...i dont really know what to hope for or pray for, but God knows exactly what i need and i am resting in that comfort tonight. i will let you know tomorrow what we find out.

"Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me." Psalm 50:15

"Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’" Isaiah 41:10

"Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work."  2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

thanks for being prayer warriors with me!!

Be Still

shhh...hold still...inside voices...listen...be still.

i have heard all of these things so many times growing up. i am still not good at any of them! be still? what does that even mean? dont you know i am a very stereotypical type A personality? but that is what i have been trying to tell myself for the past few weeks.

be still.

listen.

wait.

be still and know that God is here. listen for what God is trying to tell me over the noise of life. wait on God's perfect timing. these are all hard for me. i feel like some days are better than others, but today has been a bit more of a struggle. i am trying! God knows my heart and my desires, but i want to know HIS!

this song keeps coming to mind today. such a encouragement!

Psalm 46:10 He says, "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in earth".

Thank God

i am thanking God for so much as we finish up this year. i am especially thanking God that it is over! this year has been, by far, one of the most challenging years for me. there were some serious low lows and some amazing high highs. i have tried very hard not to be down in the dump the whole year, but saying good bye to Charlotte right after the year started, was really rough. peter and i were able to grow so much closer together, we spent great time with our friends and family, we moved across the country, found an awesome new church, and have started making new friends (in fact we are having about 20 people over tonight...i bought a chocolate fountain!).

i was really hoping that this less than ideal year would end with us finding out we were pregnant...no such luck. this week has been difficult with not spending the holidays with family, and the disappointment of a negative pregnancy test, and then starting my period was a big blow. i really thought that it would happen. i thought that we could finish the year on a high note. i thought that we would have some hope while we celebrate Charlotte's birthday next week. i dont understand why it is not happening for us. i try to tell myself that everything will happen when God whats it to, just how He wants it to, but that is not always easy to swallow.

i will always cherish this year...Charlotte's year...for all that i have learned and grown through. i am so honored that God chose us for this journey, even though it is not easy. i am so thankful for the people that i have met and have helped me grow. i am especially grateful to God for bringing lisa into my life. i  have learned so much from her this year! i just know that Charlotte and Jaxton are best friends in heaven, just like their mommies down here. i am so excited about all that God is doing in and through lisa's life because of her faithfulness through the tests of life! i hope that the same can be said of me.

today i am looking forward...knowing that God is still right here, leading me and directing me. this year the only resolution i am making is to be aware each day of what God is doing in my life, to not forget all that we have been given and blessed with. i am going to look for the daily opportunities to share what God has given me with those around me.

"God, thank you for this year. thank you for our time, though too short, with our sweet baby girl. i am trusting you with this next year. i know that you have so much for us...please make that plan abundantly clear. thank you for providing not only a new job for both of us, but a beautiful home, a growing church, many new friends, and the health of our family. thank you for the constant reminders that You are in control. please help me keep my eyes open to the needs around me. please help not become so consumed with my own life that i miss out on what You have for me. You have promised me the desires of my heart, help me remember that You know the best timing for all of those things! God, thank you for the countless blessings, especially the gift salvation through Your Son. thank you! Amen"

Romans 5:2-5 And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

i pray that you feel the love of God all through the next year...in good times and bad!

So Different

a year ago today, peter and i found out we were pregnant! i had come home from work and taken the test while peter was out for a bike ride. the test immediately came back positive and i was so excited!! i wrapped up the positive test in tissue paper, put it inside of a hair color box, and wrapped the box with more tissue paper...quick planning! peter called me as i was finishing up the wrapping and asked if i would come get him from the bike path...he had gotten a flat tire on his bike that he could not repair. i wanted so badly to tell him on the ride home, but knew i should wait. i told him to hurry up and go change his clothes so that we could go to dinner. we had already planned a date night to our favorite local mexican place. after changing, i told him i had a gift for him...as he was unwrapping it he was totally clueless, he had no idea i had even taken a test! once he got to the second wrapping of tissue, he asked if i got him a new pen...i laughed and said "no, keep going!" as he unwrapped the test he looked at me, figured out what it meant and then got this HUGE grin on his face. i wish i would have had my camera ready...it was PRICELESS!!! at one point over dinner, while we were planning on how to tell our families and making big plans for a nursery and different names we liked, we joked about how excited we were over a pee stick and how much that urine test was going to change our lives. we had no idea!!!

i took another test this week. it was negative. i was so sad and super dissapointed. i still am...but today i am more pissed because i have stinkin' cramps. i have been thinking a lot about how many things are different than they were a year ago. some for the better, some for the worse, and some just different. i had to stop counting how many different people announced that they were pregnant in the last week. here is the deal...i am excited for them! i DO NOT want other people's lives to be put on hold! i just wish i was looking forward to having another baby not cramps! all in God's time...i know. i have just needed more help reminding myself of that this week. thanks, mom and lisa, for hearing me out and then giving me a kick in the butt!

here are a few pics from the beginning last time...i didnt blog about our pregnancy until we had gotten bad news, so i wanted to share them now...we were so excited. i still get so excited thinking about all of it. i will always love my baby girl and these pictures will always be precious to me!!

not even a question!

right after dinner, the day we found out!

this is how we told our extended family in october...
"guess who is adding a pumpkin to their patch"

"we are! babyLo is due in May!"

If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ... Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:31-39

Answered Prayer

last week i was able to experience something really awesome...answered prayer. i have experienced answered prayer a lot lately, but this was AWESOME!!!!!

one of my best friends, piper, lives in traverse city, mi. with her hubby and their little boy corban. piper and i have been close friends since her freshman year (my sophomore year) of college. we have been roommates, traveled to australia together, been a part of each other's weddings...basically we have had a blast being friends for the past 9 years!! some days i cant believe it has been that long and other days it seems as though we have been friends forever! i love her hubby, doug...they are perfect for each other...and they are both amazing parents to one and a half year old corban! piper was such an encouragement to me, even from far away, when everything was going on with Charlotte. she and her mom came to visit and then the whole family was down in may for Charlotte's balloon celebration. between piper, sarah mack (the third friend in this trifecta) and myself, we have seen and done just about all of it! piper even held my hand for my first tattoo!! :)

so, several weeks back i got a call from piper that she and doug were pregnant again. i was so thrilled and had to call her back to razz her about getting pregnant at my house...she is still denying it, but i think it is true! :) fast forward a few weeks...piper and i had made plans that she would come down from T.C. to visit me at my mom's before i moved to houston for good. she was also coming for a haircut...nice perk, even if it was a 3 hour drive. well, just a few days before going to michigan, i got a late night phone call from piper asking me to call her back right away. she said "i am ok and the baby is ok, but there is a problem." needless to say, i freaked! i called her back as soon as i got the message. piper proceeded to tell me, very calmly i might add, that she had started bleeding the night before, was told to wait til morning to come in, bled some more that next morning, and went in for an ultrasound to find out what was going on (i am pretty sure she was about 13 weeks at that point). the doctor found that piper's placenta was sitting at the bottom of her uterus (placenta previa) and that the placenta was starting to lift off (placental abruption). NOT GOOD! the baby was doing great though...moving around and very strong heartbeat. the good news was that the placenta had not completed lifted off yet. if it did she would miscarry the baby. the doc put piper on complete bed rest immediately...hoping that the placenta would reattach itself to the uterus and not lift off any further.

while talking with piper, initially, i was very careful not to say too much, but i knew that this was pretty serious. i called both peter and lisa and told them...asked them to start praying. lisa and i cried together, both feeling so much of what we did when we got our results just months back. we talked about why this continues to happen to people who really want and desire to have families, and not to those who dont...all of those insecurities that have surrounded each of us for the past 8 months or so.

i was set to leave for michigan 2 days after talking with piper. of course because of the bed rest, there was no way that she could come to kalamazoo to see me, so my mom and i decided that we would make a day trip up to see piper that thursday. piper and i were both excited, even under the junky circumstances. before going, i was praying not only for this little baby and for piper, but also that i would not be too hard on piper, or too emotional. it all was seeming a little fresh, at times. piper was scheduled for almost 2 weeks of bed rest before her next doctor's visit and my trip fell right in the middle of that. when i got there, kelly (pipe's mom), corban, and pipe were all hangin out in the master bedroom...pipe pretty much was only allowed to lay in bed and get up to go to the bathroom...an occasional quick shower was acceptable too. we all "played", talked, and hung out before lunch, then i was able to have some girl time with pipe while corban slept and kelly went to get food. my mom pretty much ditched me to look around downtown TC...she claims she didnt want to intrude on my time with pipe, but i know that she just wanted to shop. by the end of the day, i had cut piper and corban's hair, given piper a pedi, and almost convinced kelly to chop her hair off...next time! i tried hard all day to keep it together for pipe, but before leaving, while praying together i lost it...we both lost it. my heart was hurting for my friend! i was so unsure of what God was doing, why He was allowing this to happen to my best friend, didnt understand what kind of impact this would have on the family. we prayed for complete healing, for strength, and for peace. we prayed that people around them would be encouraging and that God would work a miracle in piper's body. we hugged, several times (which is not normal for me, good thing i love you, pipe!) she promised to call me immediately after her appointment the next week about what the doctor said.

i didnt have to wait long to talk to pipe again...i realized 45 minutes down the road that i left my wallet at her house...great! of course, my mother refused to turn around, so i had to have doug overnight mail it to me...thanks, doug!! the whole next week i prayed for piper, doug and little baby radtke all the time. i knew how long days could drag waiting for information, worrying about your baby. pipe and i talked a few times through text, but we were both pretty anxious about thursday morning.

i heard from piper thursday at 10:34am that the doctor said that her placenta reattached itself!!!!!! woohoo!!! the bleeding had stopped, which is what they were looking for, the baby's heart beat was still strong, and pipe was right on track growth wise!!! PRAISE THE LORD!!! we are still hoping that the previa "fixes" itself, meaning that it will move away from the bottom of the uterus. if not, pipe will have to have a c-section when it is baby time. in the big scope of things, that is the least of her worries! she was told that she still needs to take it easy, i think she called it "light bed rest"...basically, her 18 mo. old cant be bouncing up and down on her, no vacuuming, no lifting, etc.

i am so excited, they are so excited, her friends and family are so excited!!! this has been a huge answer to prayer!!! we are still praying, but this is an AWESOME start! :) please pray that the baby (which i think is a girl, btw, but they wont find out til delivery) continues to grow right on schedule, please pray that pipe's body continues to be a healthy and safe environment for this little one, please pray that the placenta moves as the blood source in the uterus moves!! we are so thankful for all that God has done so far and we are going to continue to be excited about what is in store!!!

My Shadow

I have been missing Charlotte today...not that i dont think about her everyday, but today i really miss her. this morning, peter and i went around to a few places with a realtor and i just kept thinking about how i would have decorated Charlotte's new room if she were moving with us. i love to think about decorating, and now with my new obsession over pinterest things get crazy!! :) anyway, i have come to realize that grief is kinda like a shadow. sometimes the shadow is very close to me...right up next to me, sometimes i can hardly tell the difference between what is real and what is shadow. other times, the shadow is farther away, stretched out and not so easy to make out. my (new) friend nikki and i were just talking about this the other day. the thing with shadows is you never know from day to day what you are going to have...just like grief. some days i feel pretty "normal" and i dont "see" the shadow of grief as much and other days i know as soon as i get up that my shadow is following very closely...i can almost "feel" it. that is me today. i didnt do anything differently...maybe it just has to do with having some extra time to myself this morning. i spent some time in prayer this morning, just trying to prepare for all that we had going on. i guess i need to start praying about how to emotionally and mentally deal with all that goes into a cross country move while still missing and grieving my Charlotte.

dr. cook (aka papa c), one of my favorite cedarville professors, sent me a really great article through e-mail yesterday. he told me that he read it and thought of me...i was more than touched! its not too long, but if you are in a hurry, read it when you have time to sit and think it over...dont just rush through it. definitely worth reading though!! thanks, dr. c., for thinking of me...love ya!!

Two Minutes to Eternity
Why would God allow the miracle of birth to be followed so quickly by the mystery of death?
Marshall Shelley
Monday, July 11, 2011
I was with my son his entire life. Two minutes.
He entered the world of light and air at 8:20 p.m. on November 22, 1991. And he departed, the doctor said, at 8:22.
It seemed a very short time. Too short. My wife, Susan, and I never got to see him take his first steps. We barely got to see him take his first breath.
I don't know if he would have enjoyed softball or software, dinosaurs or dragonflies, machines or math. We never got to wrestle, race, or read—would he have enjoyed those things like his older sisters do? What would have made him laugh? Made him scared? Made him angry?
Those questions swarmed around my soul in the days following my son's arrival and all-too-hurried departure. So many things I wondered. But one question loomed larger than all the rest, haunting me for months: Why would God create a child to live two minutes?
Many tragic deaths can be blamed on human cruelty or foolishness. A stray bullet punctures a tenement wall and kills an infant. A driver loses control of a car and careens into a group of schoolchildren on the sidewalk. Senseless. Heartbreaking. But at least I know where to direct my anger.
With my son, no direct human responsibility could be charged in his death. It was a "chromosomal abnormality" called Trisomy 13. One of the 23 sets of chromosomes developed a third appendage. Despite genetic tests and the expert opinions of doctors, we discovered no known cause for this condition.
As far as I was concerned, this was a design flaw. And the Designer was directly responsible.
I remember the first time I heard the term "Trisomy 13." It was the same hour I first saw my son—as ghostly black-white-and-gray movements on the sonogram screen. In silence, Susan and I watched the embryonic motions as Dr. Silver manipulated the ultrasound, measuring the cranium and the femur and viewing the internal organs.
"Is everything okay?" I asked.
"Let me complete the examination, and I'll give you a full report," he said. I noted his evasive answer and hoped this was merely his standard procedure.
Moments later, he announced his observations in a matter-of-fact voice: "We have some problems. The fetus has a malformed heart—the aorta is attached incorrectly. There are missing portions of the cerebellum. A club foot. A cleft palate and perhaps a cleft lip. Possibly spina bifida. This is probably a case of Trisomy 13 or Trisomy 18. In either case, it is a condition incompatible with life."
Neither Susan nor I could say anything. So Dr. Silver continued.
"It's likely the fetus will spontaneously miscarry. If the child is born, it will not survive long outside the womb. You need to decide if you want to try to carry this pregnancy to term."
We both knew what he was asking. I was speechless. Susan found her voice first. Though shaken by the news, she said softly but clearly, "We believe God is the giver and taker of life. If the only opportunity I have to know this child is in my womb, I don't want to cut that time short. If the only world he is to know is the womb, I want that world to be as safe as I can make it."
We left the medical center that July afternoon stunned and saddened.
"Pregnancy is hard enough when you know you're going to leave the hospital with a baby," Susan said. "I don't know how I can go through the pain of childbirth knowing I won't have a child to hold."
Signs of the Pneuma
Summer turned to fall, and we were praying that our son would be healed. And if a long life were not God's intention for him, we prayed that he could at least experience the breath of life. We longed see that reminder of God's Spirit, the Pneuma, flow through him like a gentle wind.
Even that request seemed in jeopardy as labor began November 22. As the contractions got more severe, signs of fetal distress caused the nurses to ask, "Should we try to deliver the baby alive?"
"Yes, if at all possible, short of surgery," Susan replied.
They kept repositioning Susan and gave her oxygen, and the fetal distress eased.
And then suddenly the baby was out. The doctor cut the cord and gently placed him on Susan's chest. He was a healthy pink, and we saw his chest rise and fall. The breath of life. Thank you, God.
Then, almost immediately, he began to turn blue. We stroked his face and whispered words of welcome, of love, of farewell. And all too soon the doctor said, "He's gone."
Within minutes, our pastor, our parents, and our children came into the room. Together we wept, held one another, and took turns holding our son. My chest ached from heaviness. Death is enormous, immense, unstoppable.
The loss was crushing, but mingled with the tears and the terrible pain was something else. I'm not sure I can describe it.
At the births of my three older daughters, I'd felt "the miracle of birth," that sacred moment when a new life enters the world of light and air. The pneuma, the breath of life, fills the lungs for the first time. Now this moment was doubly intense because the miracle of birth was followed so quickly by the mystery of death. The pneuma was here and now gone.
"It feels like eternity just intersected earth" was all I could say to our pastor. The pain of grief was diminished not at all, but it blended with the weight of overwhelming wonder at the irresistible movement from time to eternity.
"Do you have a name for the baby?" asked one of the nurses.
"Toby," Susan said. "It's short for a biblical name, Tobiah, which means 'God is good.' "
We had long thought about the name for this child. We didn't particularly feel God's goodness at that moment. The name was what we believed, not what we felt. It was what we wanted to feel again someday.
The words of C.S. Lewis, describing the lion Aslan, kept coming to mind: "He's not a tame lion. But he's good." We clung to that image of untamed and fearsome goodness, even as we continued to struggle with the question: Why would God create a child to live two minutes?
Everything has an inside
Shortly before we discovered Toby's condition, I read a book by Christopher de Vinck, The Power of the Powerless, in which he describes what he learned from his severely and profoundly retarded brother, Oliver.
I was interested because our third daughter, Mandy, was also severely retarded, unable to respond to her environment. And just three months after Toby's birth and death, Mandy also entered eternity. She was two weeks shy of her second birthday. One of the points de Vinck made about Oliver helped me with the God-directed questions I had after Toby's birth and death.
One of the greatest discoveries that a child or an adult can make, writes de Vinck, is that "everything has an inside. In our house, we split apples to look at the core, we crack walnuts to see the meat inside, we press a toy stethoscope to our chests to listen to the heartbeat."
The point: you can't always guess what's on the inside by looking at the outside.
The Bible says that "Man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart." That was true then. It's true now. We're so outer focused. We're taught to judge people by the stylishness of their clothing labels. Political campaigns are crafted by scriptwriters, TV directors, and pollsters. Educational policies are based on appearances of political correctness. We're tempted to believe that image is everything, that outward appearances are most important. We ignore the inside, the heart, the spirit.
Each of my children also has an inside. With my two older girls, I get occasional glimpses of their interior life. Their words and actions give me clues about their inner worlds. With Mandy, the glass was darker. And with Toby, we never had a chance to see inside.
But Mandy and Toby both had insides. Despite the damage to the outer frame, the inside is to be treasured.
Our unearthly calling
Not long after we buried Toby and Mandy, our seven-year-old daughter, Stacey, told us she heard God's voice in the middle of the night telling her that "Mandy and Toby are very busy. They are building our house, and they are guarding his throne."
Not knowing how to respond to a child who had never offered a claim like that before, I found myself reading the Bible with renewed interest in descriptions of heavenly activities. Was this message consistent with Scripture? Our family discussions usually focused on heaven.
We saw that heaven is a place of activity, not just leisure or ease. God is preparing a city for the faithful (Heb. 11:16), where all will be made perfect and complete (Heb. 11:40). The Bible contains many descriptions of heavenly worship as active and intense.
And since Jesus said that in his Father's house are "many mansions" and he was going to prepare a place for us (John 14), we could easily envision part of our heavenly activity being to help prepare for those yet to arrive.
I must admit, however, that I was more intrigued by the image of guarding Christ's throne. Was this an honor guard? A ceremonial assemblage of children, whom Christ on earth had invited to be near him? Or perhaps seats of honor for those Christ had in mind when he said, "The last shall be first"? I can't think of many more "last" than Mandy and Toby.
But what if guarding the throne isn't ceremonial but actual? Daniel 10 describes the angel Michael in conflict with a spiritual foe. Ephesians 6:12 describes a struggle "against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Could it be that among the spiritual warriors in this conflict is one named Toby?
The Book of Revelation records battles involving heavenly armies (Rev. 19:19). Could it be that along with countless others of us, Toby will serve among the heavenly hosts in that final great war?
All of this, of course, is conjecture. But what is clear is that heaven will be a place of active duty.
And when the ultimate spiritual battle is over, our responsibilities continue.
The apostle John's vision of eternity suggests what's in store for all the saints: "The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads …. And they will reign forever and ever" (Rev. 22:3-5).
I don't know exactly what our service in that city will involve, nor can I be specific about how we will assist in reigning. But those tasks sound like they may have a bit more significance than most careers we pursue in our current lifetime.
Could it be that when I finally start the most significant service of my life, I'll find that this is what I was truly created for? I may find that the reason I was created was not for anything I accomplish on earth, but the role I'm to fulfill forever.
I realized that my earlier question had been answered.
Why did God create a child to live two minutes?
He didn't.
He didn't create Toby to live two minutes or Mandy to live two years. He didn't create me to live 40 years (or whatever number he may choose to extend my days in this world).
God created Toby for eternity. He created each of us for eternity, where we may be surprised to find our true calling, which always seemed just out of reach here on earth.

this is a poster/picture i found on pinterest...i think it is totally appropriate for me today :)
